Master Z was kindly sent the book: Toby and The Falcon a few weeks ago to review, and since receiving it, we have read it a couple of times.

What’s the book about?

Toby and The Falcon follows Toby the Traveling Toy Poodle’s first international move from the USA to the UAE. Toby is worried about moving to a new country and leaving loved ones, but he meets an unlikely companion who helps to ease his worries with words of wisdom and friendly advice.

“Toby and The Falcon is the first book in the series. The series as a whole promotes international-mindedness in young learners through the ten PYP attributes of the learner profile: balanced, caring, communicator inquirer, knowledgeable, open-minded, principled, reflective, risk-taker, and thinker.”

What we loved about this book…

Master Z really enjoyed the colourful illustrations and I loved that this book uses a very calm colour palette of light blues and such. Another great thing that I noticed, as I read this book to my child, is that the book opens from top to bottom, rather than the traditional left to right, making it really easy to read in your lap at bed time and such.

Another great feature that my son particularly enjoyed was the fold out map game at the back of the book, making it an interactive read with 25 questions on topics that we can discuss and explore together.

There is also an educational element incorporated on each page of the book, where all the pages are numbered and also include the alphabets. It also has a little time stamp at the bottom, tracking the number of hours spent on this place, which Master Z enjoyed noticing the increase of the line as the story progressed and Toby neared landing at his destination in the UAE.

Overall, Master Z and I really enjoyed this story, and I would highly recommend this book to all expat children who have already made or are about to make a move sooner or later. It is also really beneficial for expat children in the UAE to get to know more about their host country and it’s vibrant culture. I love how this book encouraged Master Z to ask many questions and also build a sense of pride and belonging to the UAE.
