My Discovery Lab – Review…

Over the past couple of days, Master Z has been running home back from school full of excitement for one thing, and one thing only. Slime.

I still remember having a huge box of chemicals, test tubes, petri dishes and such to create tiny experiments up in my attic when I was a teen. So when I was approached by Rock It Science to try out their October Science Experiment box, I couldn’t say yes fast enough! Before I let you know about how we got on, let me introduce you to the concept.

My Discovery Lab has been created by Nichola Fisher, a fully qualified Science teacher and the founder of Rock it Science. Rock it Science was established in 2016 and hosts science-themed birthday parties (www.rockitscienceparties.com), educational workshops, and shows. It also provides inspiring teacher training workshops (www.rockitscienceeducation.com).

Rock it Science has now launched monthly subscription boxes that bring exciting science experiments into your home which are age appropriate and include all that you will need to conduct them.

The founder, Nichola Fisher, is a secondary Science teacher and mum of three boys, and knows how hard it can be to inspire and engage young children. Keeping them occupied in a productive manner is another challenge that all mothers face. Nichola is passionate about getting children excited about science from an early age and, after seeing the success of hands-on learning with Rock it Science, she has created My Discovery Lab for you to share at home.

All of our activities are fun and most importantly safe, plus they tie into the school curriculum. We incorporate the principles of STEAM learning, which help to encourage exploration, promote creativity, and boost your child’s problem-solving abilities. Whilst Science is the focus of My Discovery Lab, children are also developing a number of other important skills that are integral to their overall education.

What’s in the My Discovery Lab Box?

My Discovery Lab boxes are based on a new theme each month. Each month comes with up to 5 experiments, a magazine with all the instructions containing visuals & video links and majority of the supplies that you will be needing to create the experiments. Boxes are available for three age groups – 3 to 5 years, 6 to 9 years, and 10 to 14 years, so you can choose whichever is most age appropriate to your child.

The October Box is all about Polymers, or as the kids would better describe it: Slime! All the supplies needed are included, including things like plastic bowls, cups and mixing spoons. This is extremely handy! This box includes experiments for crazy Cornflour, stretchy Slime, making your own snow, playing with waterbeads and making “Worms”. You can see more photos and videos of these experiments on my Instastories Highlight Reel labelled “MyDiscoveryLab”.

Our Experience

This box made for the ideal after-school activity, once Little Z was napping in the afternoon. Master Z would dig inside the box, flick through the magazine, and tell me which experiment he wanted to try out.

I loved the excitement on his face, and it only grew as he saw the wonders and outcomes of mixing together a few chemicals to create messy fun play. Each experiment had a wow factor, and although it required me to guide him through the making of the experiment, the end result would often keep him entertained for another hour or so, as he happily played with stretchy slime or squeezed green “worms” in his hands.

Another great factor about the My Discovery Lab box is that it comes with the majority of the supplies needed. In most cases, I simply had to add some water or a big bowl to the list of items needed for an experiment.

The magazine itself is incredibily detailed, but not in the least boring, and I really like that it includes further investigative questions to understand what you did better.

Overall, it makes learning fun, and anything that does that is a big hit in our household. The boxes give value for money, and in our case we had some of the supplies like Cornflour left over to be able to make it more than once. I think Nichola has done a really great job, and I would highly recommend you try out these Discovery Lab Boxes with your own children.
